Noteworthy comeback for Nico Verdonck

More discrete than he would have wished at the beginning of this 2015 season, with a mere two BRCC races under his belt, Nico Verdonck is back! Last Saturday the Brussels based driver competed in an event of the VLN championship, on the Nürburgring, and he can now confirm that he will be at the start of the 24 Hours of Spa with a Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 entered by the Black Falcon team!

Notwithstanding a penalty finally depriving him of victory in the V5 category, Nico Verdonck was all smiles when leaving the Nürburgring circuit on Saturday evening.  Having been invited by the German ProSport team to drive a Porsche Cayman in the VLN race on the Nordschleife, the Belgian and his British teammate Adam Christodoulou more than demonstrated the car’s potential. “Right from the qualifying sessions, held on a rather damp track, I clocked up the best time in the V5 category,” the Brussels inhabitant commented. “Adam took the start and drove the first two hours. I then took over and also put in a double stint. It was a truly perfect race, without the slightest nudge or mechanical problem … We retained the lead throughout the race and we were the first in our class to take the chequered flag.”

Unfortunately a sanction – in the form of a time penalty - hit them at the end of the race relegating the ProSport team’s Porsche Cayman to second place in its category.  “In VLN the regulations regarding the return to a green flag following a yellow flag is rather specific and I was rebuked for having accelerated too soon”, Nico explained. ”For my part it’s a wrong interpretation and that cost us victory in our class. But that does not alter anything to the fact that we amply proved the car’s qualities, which was the initial aim. Never had this Cayman lapped quite so quickly on the Nürburgring and together with Adam Christodoulou we formed a highly homogenous team. Being back in competition truly made me feel good! “

At the Total 24 Hours of Spa with a Mercedes Black Falcon

The driver is harbouring some solid ambitions for the upcoming weeks. As such on the 25th and 26th July Nico Verdonck will be at the start of the Total 24 Hours of Spa with a Mercedes SLS AMG GT3, namely the car that won this very same race in the Ardennes two years earlier. “I wish to take this opportunity to thank Mercedes-Benz Belgium for their on-going support and I can now confirm that I will be teamed up with Adam Christodoulou in the Black Falcon team”, the delighted Belgian commented. “We will be entered in the Pro Cup with as yet an unnamed third driver.”

For Nico Verdonck the 24 Hours will kick-off on Wednesday, the former Formula 3000 being on hand during the test day scheduled on the undulating Ardennes circuit. This will be the ideal occasion to fully prepare for the meeting in which Nico intends to prove his worth: “The objective is to play our role as outsiders to the fullest. The car is reliable and has the power, and the team knows the car like the back of their hand. We will be aiming for an excellent result!”
