Great experience for Nico Verdonck at the ”Classic 24 Hour Daytona”

His European season over, Nico Verdonck had recently accepted HCP’s proposal to compete in the first edition of the “Classic 24 Hour Daytona” (*) organised over the weekend of 15th & 16th November 2014.

And so it was at the wheel of a 1976 Porsche 935 K1 entered by the German Amalfi Racing team that Nico took the start in Group B on the 15th November with, as teammate, Patrick Simon, for 2 daytime races and one night time race on the Saturday, followed by one daytime race on the Sunday.

Notwithstanding a highly promising start – 2nd overall and 1st in their category – it was not to be a restful weekend for the ‘old lady’ as she was suffering from differential problems and then broke down with a damaged gearbox. A great disappointment for both drivers, who at that moment were topping the leader board in the second race and proving their enormous potential.

Nico Verdonck: “Even so it was a fabulous experience to drive such a beast as the 935K1HCP, to be supported by such an extraordinary team as Amalfi Racing, and to be able to share my emotions with my teammate Patrick Simon. It was also great to note that some of my biggest fans had specially travelled over from Belgium and the Netherlands to cheer me on. I wish to take this opportunity to thank HCP for having made this unique experience possible and I truly hope that we shall have the opportunity of repeating this adventure next year.”

Nico Verdonck is presently still in the United Sates where he is holding discussions regarding the 2015 season. Worth noting that with regard to his European race commitments, these are definitely on the right track.
