Podium place in Nico Verdonck's debut in the Blancpain Sprint Series

Quite decidedly Nico Verdonck is at home in all the disciplines! During this last weekend at the Slovakia Ring he has also confirmed that he is also an excellent sprinter.

The qualifying race resulted in the ALD Automotive Mercedes SLS AMG # 84 manned by duo Nico Verdonck/Maxi Götz finishing in 5th place.

Following the first race on Saturday morning the car had moved up two places. And yet the conditions were atrocious: right from the start of the race in dry weather conditions, an initial red flag slowed the cars down following the accident of a Lamborghini. This was then followed by a heavy rain downpour, forcing the teams to swap tyres. Notwithstanding all this during his second stint, Verdonck provided the duo with a podium place taking the chequered flag 3rd place.

This Sunday in the second race, Verdonck took the first stint and immediately went into the lead, a lead he never relinquished during his stint, never offering an opening to the car behind him.

Unfortunately due to some presently unknown technical issues, the car was losing roughly two seconds per lap, costing the team a well deserved victory and finally finishing the race in 4th place.

It was a last minute request from HTP Motorsport, for Verdonck to replace Maxi Bukh for this round of the Blancpain with Maxi Götz.

Verdonck is fully at ease at the wheel of the ALD Automotive Mercedes SLS that he knows like the back of his hand and with which he is competing in the Blancpain Endurance Series championship.

Nico Verdonck: “I’m delighted with my performance. Especially when one takes into account that on Thursday evening I was still at home, thinking about an entirely different sort of weekend. Following a call from HTP Motorsport, I jumped on the first plane for Vienna on Friday morning. I did not know the Slovakia Ring circuit and I had never competed in the Blancpain Sprint Series. So all in all to clinch a podium place and score point in the championship is pretty good going J ”.

Nico Verdonck’s next rendezvous is at the 1000km of the Nürburgring (Germany) for the final round of the Blancpain Endurance Series to be held during the weekend of 20th and 21st September 2014 http://www.blancpain-gt-series.com/live.
