Well-filled day at the Green Hell and a podium for Nico Verdonck

After a well-filled day, at the wheel of two different Porsche entered by the ProSport team, Nico Verdonck was on the Nürburgring podium following his 2nd place in the SP10 category.
When you love something you don’t count the cost. This last Saturday Nico Verdonck took on two races within one! At the request of the German ProSport team, specialised in the tuning of Porsche for competition, the Brussels based driver competed in the VLN7 event on the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife at the wheel of two different cars. “In the first instance I drove the team’s Porsche 997 Cup together with Adam Christodoulou, Peter Terting and Jörg Viebahn", Nico explained. “This car was entered among the fifteen competitors in the SP7 class, a category bringing together various 991 Cup machines, more recent and with a better performance than ours. In addition to this 997 Cup, I also found myself behind the wheel of the Porsche Cayman GT4 in the SP10 category. For this I was teamed up with Arno Klasen, Thomas Koll and Peter Terting. This obviously promised to be a pretty enlivened day seeing I needed to take on 4 hours of racing in a 6 hours race. But I definitely wasn’t complaining!"
Right from the qualifying sessions, held under varied weather conditions, Nico Verdonck let the guns do the talking. He took full advantage of the conditions to slot the “small” Porsche Cayman GT4 into 13th place overall, and moreover registering - by far - the best time in the SP10 category. “I was on the track just at the right moment”, the smiling Belgian commented. “But I do believe that I did put in an excellent lap. I also produced the best time with the other car, the 997 Cup, but it was during a less opportune moment and I found myself with a 28th time in the qualifying sessions, good for a 4th place in the SP10 category.”
It was at the wheel of the Porsche 997 Cup that Nico immediately took the start for a double stint. Over the course of two hours the Belgian defended himself perfectly. “It was raining as I took the start and I immediately found the right pace. I gained a few places, and after three laps I switched to slicks, bringing the car up into 3rd spot in the SP10 class. It was truly a great beginning of the race!”
The Porsche 997 Cup #61 finally took the chequered flag in 16th position overall, and it was only near the end of the race that he missed out on a podium place in the SP7 class. “However this 4th place, behind three more powerful 991 Cup cars, is the best we could achieve”, Nico added.
While his teammates continued their work with the 997 Cup, Nico slid behind the wheel of the Porsche Cayman GT4 for the last two hours of the race. “We were battling it out for victory in the SP10 class, but unfortunately we were forced to add a dash of fuel near the end of the race. However this didn’t prevent us from finding ourselves on the second tread of the podium in our class and finishing in the top-25 overall.”
Over and above this result Nico Verdonck will retain great memories of this experience. “I truly wish to thank the ProSport team for their trust”, the young 29 year old smiled. “To compete with two different cars, and in ever changing climatic conditions, was something new for me… and pretty enjoyable! I believe the team was satisfied with my performances and this is the best way to thank them. I would also like to congratulate my teammate Adam Christodoulou (who was also competing on two cars, Ed), the Black Falcon team and AMG for their overall victory with the Mercedes in this event.”
As we slowly come to the end of the season, Nico Verdonck is already looking to the future. “Next year’s objective is to compete in the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring with a GT3 and to go full out for victory”, Nico clarified. “This type of race is the ideal way to prepare for such a challenge. Likewise I have received several propositions to eventually set up an interesting programme. For that matter I will have a few test sessions shortly … it’s too early to go any deeper into the matter, but for the 2016 season I definitely intend taking on a good programme!"
